What is funny is it was one excuse after another with their fans regarding Patton. At first they scoffed because no one else recruited him when we got him. Than he had a superb summer and got ranked nationally by all the publications, than their excuse than was he will never qualify. He is going to qualify. Now they are sitting their with only 1 returning big who played about 10 minutes all last season. I can't wait to see Patton play vs them, it will be great

Who is 'wop', and does anyone know where that nickname came from?

Maurice Watson...it's a shortened form of his nickname, "Doo-Wop." I do not know it's genesis. His twitter is @WopCU10

That's all I know...which isn't much.

They still don't have anything for Krampelj, and neither Thomas nor Stewart made their final top 247. Thomas is 300 in their composite and Stewart is 326.

But if nothing else materializes, Patton + Foster + a potential role player or two = a pretty respectable recruiting year.

The evaluation of Khyri Thomas is everything you need to know about ratings. If he doesn't pig out on dorm food and skip classes like I did as a freshman, he will be a very good player. Haven't seen Marlon or Martin play, so can't speak to that. But I've watched Khyri Thomas and he can defend and score.

And as long as I'm sticking up for Omaha kids, the ratings guys missed on Tre'shawn Thurman too. Not second guessing our staff, because who knows what was involved there. But people who saw him in Kearney in high school say he outplayed Ronnie. And he outshone Leon last year in summer league, not even close. Had 12 points and 7 boards against Marquette, got twice as many minutes during the season as Jake White, who was on Wichita's Final Four team. (some extenuating circumstances, but still ...)

Ratings have their place, but getting fixated on them is a fool's game.

I'm bullish on Thomas, too. No way that there are 299 incoming Freshmen more ready to contribute than Khyri.

Just don't know what to think about Marlon. If you view him in the context of that random looking 326 rating, he seems likely to have a better college career than that. If you view him in the context of a guy who some thought might end up considered as a top 150 guy, he could disappoint a bit based on some of the more bearish comments we've seen. At the end of the day, that guard who is going to North Dakota and he led a HS program without much tradition to a state championship, and those 2 guys averaged almost identical points per game with Marlon being the PG. That plus his strong frame provide reason for some optimism, if all we're expecting is an apprentice for Watson the next 2 years.

But clearly, Patton is the cornerstone of the class and is a player who could have a very, very special Creighton career if he takes advantage of this opportunity.

Relative to Marlon, I would add that he had 23 of his team's 57 points in beating top ranked and defending state champ Iowa City West during state in Des Moines. If he brings that kind of big stage game to Omaha, he will be a good college player.

Thank you for the explanation on the nickname 'wop'. I wonder if the young man knows that it's an offensive term used against an ethnic group. Similar to the 'n' word, the 's' word, the 'k' word, the 'r' word and all the others.

I'm new to posting here, but I've been a fan since 1974 (as my username implies). I would hope that mature Creighton fans of all ages would refrain from using this negative appellation regardless of what the young player wishes. How many nicknames are necessary? Isn't 'Mo' good enough?

New, less offensive uses of the term "WOP." I am guessing Mr. Watson is more in touch with the current usage...particularly worth noting is c).

a) A dance popularized by the viral song WOP. According to USA Today, WOP, by @TheRealJDash, is one of the TOP 10 Hip-Hop Dance Songs of the past decade and has spent several weeks on the BillBoard HOT 100 which recognizes the top 100 songs in the world.
b) A hashtag used on social media postings. When something awesome happens, or when the underdog wins, people add #WOP to their social media posts. As originally used, an awesome event was tagged #WOP to denote the person was so happy that they wanted to dance (to WOP). Additionally, it is sometimes used when an underdog defeats the higher ranked opponent in sports, politics, business, etc. as in "StereoFame Records is kicking major label ass. #WOP" or "The Pirates keep winning with the lowest payroll in baseball! #WOP"
c) An acronym for the dance meaning With Out Prejudice.
d) The act of a female dancing and bouncing their gluteus maximus in a twerk-like fashion so as to arouse all men watching.

I love how trolls always have an early post JUST like this one.
