Isn't it time to put UNO on the schedule

Postby 59County » Wed Apr 02, 2025 11:15 am

Omaha has upped its profile considerably.
Also, Crutchfield is very open about being a Mid-level school that encourages its top players to explore their options once they have success at UNO. Fidler, Sutton, JJ White, Etc.
Maybe it's time to mend fences with UNO and put them on the non-conference schedule. With the current NIL/Transfer rules its possible that some of the smaller schools will become feeder schools for the larger schools.
It's ridiculous to me to see UMKC (or other summit league teams) on the schedule and not Omaha.
Thoughts?

Much like playing nebraska, playing Omaha is not a benefit to the jays. I'd rather we don't play either of them.

Annual charity or NIL generating exhibition would be fun but all downside/no upside otherwise.

If the Jays are playing a Summit league team, it should be Omaha, end of story. If the worry is the optics of losing to them v. ND State (both extreme unlikely) then what's the confidence level of the staff?

It would be great for basketball in the city, and this is the kind of attitude Nebraska had toward Creighton in the Valley days, which should make one to want this to happen.

This comes up every single year....I don't think CU benefits from this game much and I will always point to the series history when people (usually Husker fans) tell me that UNO would beat CU.

41-3....that is the record for CU in the series. Including 30-1 at home (we know that the game would have to be played at CHI)

The last time we played them was the 20-21 season and CU won by nearly 30 and none of the starters even played more than 25 min outside of Zegarowski.

Exactly. What's the upside? Sure you're generating local buzz, but outside of that, it only hinders our team. Creighton would need to blow them out by 30 every time or it might cost them a seedline.

Sad to say, but that's the state of NCAA Basketball now. Given the move to mega-conferences like the SEC and B10, it doesn't make sense to schedule good low-majors or any mid-majors. It has to be either cupcakes or major conference matchups. There is no in-between anymore.

The 20-21 state of Omaha basketball is as close to the current state as CU Big East year 2 team is to the current one. CU beat UMKC, by 23, a team Omaha swept by an average of 14 points, so yea, I'm sure Jays win by 30 this year(or not).

As long as the Jays play a Summit team, that team should be Omaha, who it seems there is a lack of knowledge about the current state of its program on this board.

The NCAA approved 2 exhibition games starting next year. We don't have to do a charity donation to book a 2nd game anymore like we did with Purdue. I don't know if that is in addition or in place of the 'super secret' scrimmage that to longer needs to be secret.
Play Omaha and get the city extra excited for college hoops. It's wouldn't have to be like the old Iowa days where their legislature required UI and ISU play UNI each year. during the regular season. I'm guessing Mac was at UNI for a couple of those years. It wouldn't have to be every year, just enough to make it look like we aren't scared to play them. Which it looks like now. Act like you're Kansas and can beat anyone. Oh wait, they wouldn't play us because they also worried they would lose.
