Team really needed a win like this one to help get the bench guys some confidence. It's going to be the Kalkbrenner/Ashworth show mostly this season with Pop out, but we need to get the rest of the team clicking so we have options outside of those 2, and we did that almost perfectly last night
Offense - Not our best Offensive performance of the year, but the second best one since Pop went down (only behind the great shooting night vs. Nova) and we did it by having the Bench show up along with Kalk/Ash. Starters didn't do a ton on offense last night, but the whole forward situation is going to be a bit of a game to game thing depending on matchups and on who is hot in a particular game. Last night it was Traudt/Miller off the bench
Defense - Providence has been scoring points in bunches the past few games and we pretty much shut them down. Obviously Kalkbrenner had a great influence on what they could do in the paint, but our guards/wings shut did a great job of staying locked in on their shooters all night. One of our best defensive performances this year, IMO
Bench - best performance by a Creighton Bench I can remember offhand. Miller +14 in his minutes, Traudt +11 in his minutes, Fedor 3/4 from the floor and getting more extended minutes, and some garbage time for the full bench. Traudt and Miller hitting their shots will give opposing coaches a lot of headaches as they think of how to deal with the triangle offense of Kalkbrenner, Ashworth, and Neal. They'll know that those 2 are seeing minutes they need to plan for, and that's even after game planning for McAndrews' range
Ashworth/Kalkbrenner - these 2 are special and we are fortunate to see a couple of guys like this playing at this level. Kalk is a guy who most of us recognize as special for all of the ways he changes games (as Kim English said ""He's different. We haven't played a center of that caliber in a while."), but the way Ashworth has been playing is something I don't think anyone really expected. He's a ballhandler, but most of us think of him as a combo guard type who is best paired with a second ballhandler like Pop, but he's stepped up and the way he's running the team is really incredible right now (English particularly commended on how fast the transition was from the passing of Ashworth).
Team is learning to play without Pop and it's been a work in progress, but if last night is a sign of how good they can be, it's a pretty good sign. Providence has struggled to get over the hump in some games, but they took St. Johns and UConn to the last seconds of games early in their Big East Schedule this year and had won 2 in a row coming into this game while playing really, really well. Tough UConn road game coming up next. It will be a good test to see if we can take some of this offense on the road with us
