Coleman has not lived up to expectations -- 0.296 from 3, 0.680 from the line, only 8.7 ppg, 1.5 assists. What is so exciting again? He's streaky and needs to improve. He may be one of the better athletes on the team if the Jays get him, but the jumping and running are not as fun to watch when the ball clanks off the rim. I'd take him but temper the excitement a little until he works to improve his game.

I missed this when it was first posted.
First of all, in all fairness, according to the link that Handdownmandown posted, the lack of excitement on the part of Gonzaga fans seems to stem more from their need for big men, rather than any particular problems with Coleman in particular.
Secondly, there is certainly some truth Nord, that people may be overreacting a bit (somebody said he would be our first scoring option if he joined which is probably a bit of hyperbole). However, when one looks at the lack of athleticism and shortage of players that could score off the bounce last year, Coleman is a welcome sight. If he was on the team last season, he would have been the most athletic player and provided that one dimension we really lacked after JJ went down.
We have a bunch of outside shooters, so that particular skill isn't something that a lot of people are targeting. With the move to the BE, we need to get significantly more athletic immediately. The two JUCOs we signed are a start down that road. Coleman would be a nice additional piece that actually has experience playing in an extremely tough and physical conference. He did put up 29 against a solid Illinois team, so he can score. Finally, I think there are probably some that question whether Tubby was really using him correctly. I think we could use him dearly, but agree that expecting 20+ ppg is probably unfair.
Gophers transfer Joe Coleman recently had surgery to repair some cartilage build up in both ankles he suffered while playing injured last season. Coleman is focusing on his recovery right now, but he wants to narrow down his list of schools soon. The favorites right now appear to be Creighton and St. Mary’s (Calif.).

I followed Coleman's recruitment pretty closely the first time around and dreamt of landing him back then, since then I have followed his career at Minnesota with a vengeance. As some others have mentioned, he maybe still has a way to go to live up to his high school potential but I would still like to have him.
Reason I bring this up is I specifically remember his AAU coach (or High School, can't remember which), saying that he thought Coleman would be the perfect fit for Creighton, playing in the MVC. There was a lot of discussion around players that could have been stars in a conference like the MVC and really get a chance to develop their game that opted for the "bright lights" and more national spotlight of a BCS program only to fade to oblivion and relative obscurity. Coleman decided he wanted the BCS spotlight - I don't know if he has changed his mind since and it wasn't all that it promised to be or what, but how he is considering St. Mary's and their high school gym compared to Creighton, being on national TV for the majority of our games, 17,000+ a game attendance....just very odd that he is coming down to choosing between those programs.

The "other things at play" might be that the CU coaching staff may think they have a realistic shot at Jermine Marshall. They may be holding off on pulling the switch on Coleman until they know what Marshall will do. The combination of Doug and Marshall might really be something special with the support we can provide both players. I have no insider info on this. It is all just rank speculation.
