Transfers 2025

Wed Feb 12, 2025 5:49 pm

As we have watched the Jays 2024-25 season play out, it is clear that Creighton has benefitted from the transfer portal. With Neal, Ashford, and Traudt as recent examples, where will the Jays look for their next set of players?

My assumption is that they will look for a young C that is in the Kalkbrenner mold, but I am curious if others have an opinion on types of players that the Jays will look for.

I have seen mentions of Owen Freeman (Iowa), and I suspect coach firings will lead to some players entering the portal. For example, Indiana will likely have some turnover.

I am curious if there has been any inside word about any targets, thoughts, or otherwise.

Since you mentioned Iowa, if McCaffrey gets canned as many suspect, I could see the Jays going after Freeman or Josh Dix who is from CB. Dix is a great shooter but definitely needs to be more aggressive. He also is not a great defender. Freeman would be a good addition and he still has 2 years left. His body would probably be transformed much more lean being at Creighton with our strength and conditioning.

Ashworth. Put some respect on his name!

Or did I mean Darryl Ashford who transferred from JUCO about twenty years ago? I did mean Ashworth...but I brain farted.

I’m curious about which 2024 Jays recruits may transfer? We have 5 open scholies (Ash, Kalk, Neal, LJ, Knox).

Possible
Oswin (Prov)
Betsey (Cincy)
Felton (S Hall)
Dom Stewart (Penn St)
Jalen Shelly (So Cal)

Not likely
Juni Mobley (Ohio State)
Flory Bidunga (KU)

I count 3 open scholarships. You might have forgotten Hudson Greer and Shane Thomas if he holds onto his scholarship for next year.

I believe roster management changes next season. 15 players on your team regardless of scholarship status. Isn’t that correct?

4 open spots

5 out in Ash, Kalk, Jamiya, Sterling, LJ

1 in in Greer

Shane Thomas will be back on NIL non scholarship next year

In this day and age you need to expect a couple guys to transfer out after the season as well. Half a roster turnover is about what I see for next year including Knox and LJ.

11 roster spots currently spoken for for 2015, pending attrition. Josh Townley-Thomas goes to school for free so he doesn't need an athletic scholarship. But he and Shane Thomas would take up two of their roster spots regardless. Would imagine Thomas remains on scholarship; that was the plan before the midseason departures sped the process up.

One thing teams will have to determine is how to manage those last roster spots. Do they hand out 15 scholarships because they can, or can they get some of that money back to spend elsewhere in their budget if they continue recruiting walk-ons for scout team purposes? Keeping 15 high-major scholarship-worthy players happy seems like an impossible task.
