Well, we tried to rally in the second one. Lost 10-9, after a 2 hr night by McHugh (catcher who started this game after Conor Capece started the first one). Some positives to take from this though... Portland is a darn good team. They were a fringe bubble team last year and won over 30 games and could have made the tournament. It's early, it was a cold night in Portland (people were wearing coats and scarves), but our offense looked good in both of these first two games of the series. McHugh showed us that he can hit for power which is good to see; these were his first two hits of the season. Sailors played well. Capece did pinch hit late in the game, so it seems that even if one catcher sits, the other will find playing time at DH. Also, was really good to see Unga pitch well again. I watched on ESPN+, and he is an imposing figure on the mound. Definitely doesn't look like a freshman. He has not given up a run in either outing now, is a true freshman, and seems to hit mid 90s at least (as you could hear the pop of the glove on the broadcast). He also got really fired up when he got out of a mini-jam in the bottom of the 7th, which was good to see... good to see the fire and enthusiasm by him and the whole team. Venteicher continues to play well and might keep Scherrman DH'ing or pinch hitting for a bit as long as Venteicher is hot. Hopefully Scherrman gets it going to, because, as I said before, he was solid last year and a big part of the potent lineup we had last year especially on offense. Freshman pitcher Magers who had the no hitter going through 5 last week got a bit roughed up in giving up 3 runs, but that's fine... he's a freshman. He'll have his growing pains. Definitely good to have Tate Gillen back; he had two hits and played solid defense. Also, Hauser, a transfer reliever from Minnesota got roughed up last week but bounced back this week by not giving up any runs in his outing... So, overall, lots of positives to take from today's two games, I'd say. This team is good. 2-3 against tough competition on the road. Both opponents were fringe tournament teams last year and had over 30 wins. Hopefully we can win the next two, and hopefully the weather warms up a bit, and the typically Portland rain holds off, and we can win the next 2! 4-3 against this competition wouldn't be bad.
