We pitched 17 scoreless innings in a row after giving up the first runs in the first game, before giving up the winning runs in the second game. Also, it appears that that 6-4, 220 lb freshman pitcher from Toronto might be our closer. He pitched at the end of the game the other day and looked great. Also, Shane Wendt pitched well in his start, just came out after three innings because it's early in the season, and I'm sure Ed is building up the staff's endurance. In any case, I hope we get the game in tomorrow. It's been moved three times so far already because of bad weather. We need every change to get a quality win that we can get, and last season, we had so many dang cancelations especially home games due to all of the spring storms we had here. We can win this next one, and we'll be fine. It's a long season. UNCG is a quality opponent - had a good record last year - so this series shouldn't hurt our rpi down the road and may even help it, especially if we can salvage a win here tomorrow. Even with a loss, it won't be the end of the world, as road losses against solid teams don't hurt the rpi much. The main focus should be improving every week and getting some quality non-conference wins but also building for the conference so that we can actually make the conference tournament this year.

Let’s go baby. Are we making the tourney this year?

Sure hope so and think so. We are currently up 2 to 0 in the bottom of the 2nd! Ben North hr! Apparently Matt Schermann is already in the dog house; man, he was solid last year hitting and fielding. Yet, he had 2 errors in game one at 3rd and 1 error in the 2nd game. So, he has 3 errors in 2 games. Not good. So, Nick Venteicher started today instead. He's a true freshman out of Millard West.

4 to 0 Jays top 4. Will MacLean two run hr! Our starter true freshman Will Magers is pitching well after a shaky first inning that he got out of - hit two guys with 0 outs.

17 to 1 final! Good, solid bounce back. Good all-around game for the Jays. Great pitching, great hitting. And no errors on defense. On the road against what could be a very solid team.

In early D1baseball rankings watching (yes, it's meaningless at this point in the season, but this is a message board, and I enjoy following) while it's freezing cold and snowing here and enjoy looking forward to the warmer days of spring, sitting at Charles Schwab with a Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy in hand. Nebraska beat #16 Vandy over the weekend as well as shut out San Diego St., who is always solid. Nebraska did lose their first game Friday. So, Nebraska came in at #23 in today's rankings which were released prior to Nebraska's loss today to unraked Grand Canyon. It's also pretty amazing that Texas A&M is #1 and kept almost their entire roster intact including their top starting pitcher and their best power hitter after their coach abruptly quit in the middle of the CWS last year while negotiating a new contract with rival Texas. Or maybe that's not surprising since they probably felt back stabbed by their coach for abandoning them during a run to the championship series. Defending champion Tennessee is at #4 even though they lost Christian Moore (who was unbelievable in the CWS and got drafted in the top 10) and their top starting pitchers. Creighton '91 alum, UVA Coach Brian O'Connor's squad is at #2. They have as usual one of the best pitching staffs in the country.

In Jays' news, freshman pitcher Wilson Magers was named Big East pitcher of the week as he, according to gocreighton.com, "tossed five shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts." He did hit three batters but, still, he had a no hitter going almost through five complete innings, which is awesome especially for a true freshman in his first collegiate start. Nolan Sailors picked off where he left off last year... hitting 5-8 over the last two games over the opening weekend. Also, was good to see Ben North hit a home run and have a few hits; he was in a major slump at the end of last year.

The Jays aren't going to be practicing outside this week clearly, unless they headed straight to the West Coast, though it did snow in Portland two days ago. The Jays face the Portland Pilots this weekend at UP, who we went 2-1 against last year at home... Portland had a great season last year too. This weekend's series is a 4 game series, so our early pitching depth and the bullpen will be tested. Hopefully we can keep the bats hot and build on Sunday's offensive momentum, and hopefully our pitching stays strong.

Well, shoot. We had so many injuries last year that I hope we aren't already getting hit with the injury bug again. I see in the gocreighton.com preview for this weekend's 4-game set at Portland that the article notes that we had injuries to our pitching rotation already prior to last weekend, so our rotation was all thrown off. I had noticed that Eli Nissen didn't pitch, which I thought was weird, since he was so good as a freshman, and I didn't figure he'd have lost his starting job already. The article doesn't state who were the players that were or are injured or even what those injuries are, but I sure hope if Eli is injured that he's not out for long and is back quickly. He is solid. Same with Dom. I hope what that article states doesn't refer to any sort of setback for Dom's return. Argh. Go Jays.
