Fake Father Lannon wrote:Quick fact about Mr. Patton.

Per the TEDTalks Podcast, If you meet a 7ft+ tall man from the USA between 23-40 there is a ~20% chance he plays in the NBA.

So if Patton has a 20% change of playing in the NBA (assuming he reaches 7ft which it seems he will) thats worth rolling the dice.

I take that as 20% of the people in the US who are 7ft+ are NBA players, not that someone has a 20% chance of making the NBA because they're 7ft+.

I'm almost certain that stat is bogus. If there are 50 guys in the NBA 7 feet and over, that means there are only 250 males in the country in that age bracket that are 7 feet tall.

That doesn't pass the smell test. Heck, Patton's dad is over seven feet.

the 20% number is probably overblown, but there is no doubt that being 7 ft tall is a huge advantage when trying to make an NBA roster.

This is what Forbes had to say about it (probably where the number first came from), but the criticism seems to be that they used a Gaussian analysis to come up with the number of 7 footers in the country, but that number is probably incorrect due to pituitary issues, etc., and is understated.

It doesn't seem to pass the smell test but if you assume that the bell curve shape holds, there are very very few 7' tall people. At the far end of the bell curve things taper down really fast.

I can't seem to drag it out of the SI Vault but this is from a Pablo Torre article.

An actual accounting of 7-footers, domestic or global, does not exist in any reliable form. National surveys by the Center for Disease Control list no head count or percentile at that height. (Only 5% of adult American males are 6’3″ or taller.)…
The curve shaped by the CDC’s available statistics, however, does allow one to estimate the number of American men between the ages of 20 and 40 who are 7 feet or taller: fewer than 70 in all. Which indicates, by further extrapolation, that while the probability of, say, an American between 6’6″ and 6’8″ being an NBA player today stands at a mere 0.07%, it’s a staggering 17% for someone 7 feet or taller.

FYI, a bit of info on the OSA team and their performance down in KC:

http://earlaustinjr.com/?p=7300

"I got a chance to see some very good players from the region as well. The Omaha Sports Association (OSA) Crusaders won the 17U championship on Sunday. They defeated the St. Louis Eagles in the semifinals and Kansas City Run GMC in the championship game. The executed well on offense throughout the weekend. OSA had one of the top shooters in the tournament in 6’1″ guard Pierce Almond. They also had an electrifying guard in 6’0″ senior Malik Hluchoweckyl, who was a tremendous athlete in the open court. He had a few rim-rattling dunks and blocked shots on the final day. I was also impressed with 6’11″ Justin Patton, who is a Creighton commit. He is a very skilled big player who looks like his best basketball is well ahead of him."

Another note on Hluchoweckyl - states that he has inquiries from Miami (Ohio), clemson, Bowling Green and Wichita State among others.

I'm starting to think Hluchoweckyj may work himself into getting an offer from us, it all might depend on whether or not he commits to playing BBall instead of track and football. We reached out at about the same time as Wichita, so interest is heating up for him.

I feel pretty confident in saying he's playing basketball in college.

Same article...sounds like Whitt and Puryear played well also. The KC 17U team has all the names...including Dixon and Kreklow.
Not certain how we stand with Whitt and Puryear or if the coaches are still pursuing them hard? Both excellent players.

PS: The Mullins Tourney is in St Louis.

FWIW, Leon committed in mid-September last year, Ronnie about a week later. Just before that, I recall some desperation on the board that we hadn't gotten anybody. Recruiting discussions are always entertaining, but usually based on very little information. I'm glad to contribute to the lack of information! :D

thanks for this, I was trying to remember the dates of their commitments, but didn't have time to look them up. Given that last year was the first in the BE, I would think that we may have felt more pressure last year than this year.... i.e., there is no reason to think that our coaching staff is in a panic... rather, the logical explanation is that they saw a ton of top 100/150 guys and then saw Patton and Thomas and realized that they deserved our attention and their offers.

Addendum: People should a realize that we saw and offered Hanson almost immediately. He never did get a rating or evaluation from ESPN - later Rivals added more info on him after Nebraska, Gonzaga and Mizzou got involved. Should have we had a meltdown due to an unknown kid from South Dakota getting an offer so early?
