For the years since Modestas came on campus (RS freshman year), the number of players averaging 10+ mpg is:
---9 (20-21)
---8 (21-22), 9 if you count Feazell who avg'd 9.9 and played a key role in the NCAAT
---6 (22-23)
---6 (23-24)
Is this trend due to NIL, the complexity of our offense (has this changed recently?), the fact our top-end talent has improved in the past 4 years, pressure on the coaching staff to depend on the best players to win games and maintain our rankings?Complex issue that always leads to some interesting discussion. What I will say is that, guys like LJ, McAndrew, and Greer should be assumed to leave for greener pastures if they don't get significant minutes right away.
I think a lot of it is due to the unique nature of these past couple of rosters and the stars' ability to shoulder heavy minutes loads while still playing at a high level. I don't know that this year's roster has top-end guys who are so far ahead of the other options that it makes sense to play the top four guys 35+ minutes every night. There is no direct replacement for Baylor on this roster currently, especially with Zugic's status up in the air. Is Jamiya Neal going to play 37 minutes a night? Not sure I see that (he actually led ASU at 32.7 MPG last year, and they went 14-18).
We can probably slot Kalkbrenner in for 35 MPG or so again. Ashworth was at 32, and it'll probably be around there again. Isaacs was at 33 last year for Texas Tech. Miller was at 22 as Creighton's starting 4.
Say you go with:
Ashworth (33)
Isaacs (33)
Neal (27)
Green (22)
Kalkbrenner (35)
That leaves you with 50 minutes to distribute between backups — 5 for whatever you want to do at back-up five, 18 remaining at the four and 27 for the backcourt spots. I think we'll see at least one of Ashworth and Isaacs on the court at all times in competitive games, eliminating the need for a true back-up point guard.
I heard Green and Traudt both had really good offseasons. I have to think carving out a role for McAndrew is a goal. Miller is a returning starter, but he missed out on a big chunk of the offseason. Curious how that will turn out, and I do think Green and Miller sharing the court is an option (again, Zugic being eligible changes the equation there because he'll likely just eat up all those extra minutes at the 2 and 3).
