Article from yesterday from an Indiana Pacers writer noted Doug was still a free agent and maybe about 10 or so slots available for him in the NBA. It did not indicate there were other NBA teams actively after him, so the prospect of playing Euroball next year seems real.

A 3-point specialist, 49.2 percent of his career field goals have come from beyond the arc. That’s ultimately to his benefit, as he’s made 41.0 percent of his career 3s. One of the best shooters in the NBA, McDermott has the 24th-highest 3-point percentage of all-time. With that being said, any team that signs McDermott knows exactly what they’re getting.

That goes for the defensive end as well though. Long a porous defender, McDermott’s lack of lateral agility severely limits him at this end. As a result, he’s more of a situational option than his 3-point prowess suggests.

Nonetheless, a veteran team that needs a reliable outside shooter should have McDermott rather high on their list.

NBA sharpshooter Doug McDermott remains unsigned heading into the 2024–25 season. McDermott spent last season playing for the San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers but now finds himself without a team. While he was out of the Pacers rotation during their run to the Eastern Conference finals, he was a capable player on the San Antonio Spurs.

At 32 years old, he may still help a team and remains one of the best shooters in the NBA, which makes it all the more surprising that he hasn't found a spot on the contender in need of shooting. Especially since he probably won't be able to command more than the veteran minimum. Teams such as the Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers could use his shooting, but thus far no one has been linked to him.

That is interesting since he has been a useful rotation player for most of his 10-year career and has not only been one of the best three-point shooters but has been terrific finishing inside the paint. He may not be someone a team can rely on in the playoffs given his defensive limitations, but he is a useful regular-season player who can reliably knock down shots.

The minimum veteran salary could be a strike against Doug. I wouldn't look at it that way (full disclosure: I'm not an NBA GM), but teams may. They'd rather save that spot for someone who can do more than just play 10 minutes and be a great shooter, with the defensive woes. Minimum salary for someone without Doug's tenure would be a few million dollars cheaper.

I hope it's not the end of his NBA journey, but if it is, what a ride!

As a ten-year veteran, his NBA pension will pay him $215,000 annually during retirement years. Plus, the NBA has other strong payment structures/opportunities in place for qualifying players, of which Doug is one.

My favorite somewhat obscure college accolade is that Doug was 2X MVC POY and 1X Big East POY. How many players have won conference POYs for multiple conferences? (Serious question. Has anyone?).

If the professional career in the States is over, we don't have to worry about his name going anywhere. College basketball color commentators everywhere will continue to refer to Coach Greg McDermott as "Doug" multiple times every year. Older brother is a professional caddie on the PGA, and carried the bag for some successful golfers. I forgot about that. Dad must be proud!

I was puzzled during the Pacers playoff run with a healthy Doug on the bench. I thought that would FINALLY be his chance to shine on the big stage. Very strange the NBA is.

But yes if this is it he has had a solid NBA career and was an incredible Bluejay… the best ever.
