True... but most of our rotation likely isn't going to be here next year so maybe less impact than you think.

Mac is probably making in the range of $3.5-$4mm based on my understanding.

This is completely wrong. Couldn't be more wrong. Private universities have to file Form 990s as nonprofit organizations. They are required to report their top compensated employees.

Creighton's most recent 990 available, for FY2022 (https://projects.propublica.org/nonprof ... 01106/full), shows Mac made $2,317,745 plus $31,899 in other compensation.

The year prior, FY2021, he earned $2,102,052 plus $41,260 in other comp.

And since you mentioned it, Duke's most recent 990 shows that Coach K made $6,409,991 in FY2022 plus $1,019,319 in other comp.

Yeah dude props cause I had no idea. My hope is that FY2023 disclosures show a substantial raise and it's probable that's the case given the timing of extensions, etc.

This brings about a two part worry I have going forward:

1. Total basketball personnel expenditures are likely in the range of $5.5mm ($2:NIL / $2.5: Mac / $1: Asst pool and ops). Other HEAD COACHES in our weight class make that alone. Can we afford to keep pace? You're not getting the hometown discount for a replacement unless they're coming from a low/mid major and even then there's a market we'd be competing with for a Huss/Lutz/DeVries

1a. Mac leaves, why would a coach in his tree come here given the reasons he'd leave? There would have to be administrative changes or some reconciliation. Others have alluded to this.

2. Assume we keep Mac at a reasonable raise to $4, which he is certainly worth. Does that limit our ability to fill out a roster? You're raising substantially more money without making substantially more money. What gives? Someone gets upset.

It’s in the public now, all the major sports radio shows have covered it today and covered it extensively. Mac is going to get asked about Saturday, will be interesting to get his reaction, granted it probably won’t be anything more than focused on the team and this season

..by who? When has anyone in local media ever asked Mac any tough questions? If he gets asked about it, I'll be shocked

Things clearly can change but this was Mac a little under 2 years ago:

The World-Herald has learned the deal is at least four years long. Either way, it’s intended to keep the 57-year-old McDermott at Creighton until he chooses to retire.

“My hope is this is my last job,” McDermott said. “There’s nothing I don’t like about this situation.”

He referenced a previous opportunity he had a few years ago — Ohio State heavily pursued him before hiring Chris Holtmann — and how much he and his family liked CU. Adjustments in the administrative leadership — Marcus Blossom took over as athletic director after Bruce Rasmussen retired last summer — are “moving in the right direction.”

I found this article, discussing Big East payments to schools, interesting: https://painttouches.com/2023/09/08/big-east-sees-36-revenue-jump-post-covid/

Looks like for 2022, Creighton received a little over $5 million from the Big East (TV contract, tourney credits, etc.).

This table suggests Creighton's basketball revenue is approximately $14 million annually (I assume this includes everything, including tickets): https://www.collegeraptor.com/college-rankings/details/TopRevenue/Conference/Big-East-Conference/

I am not sure how accurate all of this is, and I am ignorant about operating costs. But it seems clear from the data that with the exception of UConn, the rest of the Big East schools are generally in a similar boat. So how are other programs in the conference able to pay their coaches more?

If all the schools are generally getting the same payouts from the conference, and Creighton leads the conference in attendance, where is the disconnect? Are our tickets too cheap? Do other programs simply have much bigger boosters? Is the men's basketball program forced to support all other sports without much support from general university funds?

These aren't rhetorical questions. I simply don't know.

There might have been a ramp up on BE membership and payment.

Generally conferences have a split with the NCAA units and those payouts. We may not have been receiving full payouts in the past from the conference. But it also highlights how much the advancements last few years are worth to us. And Mac of course is directly responsible for that.

Obviously, he is bonused on performance. And you can afford to boost him off some of that. But at some point it's a double dip that we probably can't afford.

GoatGibbs, I believe the NIL money is separate from the University. Of course, one could argue that alumni contributions to the NIL collective detract from alumni contributions directly to the university to some extent.

Someone please correct me if that is wrong.

You are not wrong. I'd be curious to learn what the impact of NIL has been on money flow, though. How much is it detracting from university/program donations vs. how much are boosters choosing to just donate more to support both funds/is NIL attracting new donations that didn't previously exist? The latter has to be true to a significant extent for the current model to work, right?
