Part of the same Jack Jones event that the Jays played in a year ago against BYU and Arizona State, but this time in suburban Henderson instead of in Vegas proper.

So UNLV in Sioux Falls the following year? Hmmmm

I am not a big fan of these neutral site games (other than tournaments). What don't we just do a home and home with UNLV?

Some Classic. Two games, four days apart. Apparently, each game is a one-off, and we end up with the midweek game. And we're not even in the main room. Henderson is like Vegas' lounge act. We're a headliner, dammit. We belong on the big stage.

I would have expected more from Jack Jones. This is more like the Pink Martini and the Lounge Kittens Classic.

With UNLV game announced here are our opponents and projected Bart Torvik rankings (updated after yesterday's decisions w/ us at 4th):

Alabama (H) #17
Iowa (H) #43
Nebraska (A) #45
Oklahoma St. (A) #58
2 of 3 in KC: Colorado St. (N) #64 Loyola (N) #65 or Boston College (N) #94
UNLV (N/A) #67
Texas Southern #197 (best of the SWAC)

So, theoretically we could end up playing 7 of our 8 current members as NCAAT quality based purely on these rankings. I know, I know chances are very high that it could just be 2 or 3 of them that make it. I think it's a great mix of semi-decent Top 100 teams that give the Jays a chance to grow while still challenging them and not killing their NET. I also like that our top 2 opponents are at home and the home crowd gets some actual good competition in the non-con to watch again.

For the remaining 3 games, I'd like to see some Big West school (thinking UC Davis, Hawaii or UC San Diego maybe?), a Summit league opponent (Oral Roberts, Denver maybe?) and I know it's a pipe dream but an MVC opponent that maybe we could work out a Home-neutral site game (like UNI here then in Des Moines next year) or a bottom-feeder MVC opponent (like Evansville, Valpo, Ill-Chicago) that could just be a buy game.

I think of an NCAAT caliber team to be one that could earn an at-large bid. There are 36 of those, and if you allow for a handful of conference autobids (i.e., Power 6 plus one or two others) I think of "NCAA team" as being in the top 40 (ish). I'm not sure how a neutral court game against a midlevel MWC team helps. If we were going with an neutral court game, I would like to see us matched with another preseason top 25 team.

I want a caliber of team where our bench can play competitive minutes. It hindered us in multiple ways last year with opponents where we needed mostly 6 players to win. The BE is talented enough where we can get decent teams (hopefully) at home and gets minutes for everyone. Our post season is almost guaranteed with a top half place in the league. We needed more shooters last year because most of our losses were when others dared us to shoot. And we couldn't. Live, game minutes are needed to show where to shoot, when to shoot and if you can shoot when called upon

I completely agree, but this year's schedule (as opposed to last year's gauntlet) looks like it already has those opportunities with the home games against Bama and Iowa and the tourney in KC (and possibly the two roadies). I just thought if we were going to do another neutral game, let's find a team like TCU or Gonzaga. Otherwise, fill out the schedule with cupcakes or maybe lure an MVC team for a home game.

Here is what we are compiling for all the Big East non-conference schedules for next season.

BTW, Ed Cooley is doing what he does best -- scheduling bad non-conference schedules like he plays in the MVC. At least he has an excuse with Georgetown. I'm just glad Creighton doesn't have a non-conference like we are in the Valley anymore.
