I think everyone outside of the top 100 is going to wind up starting out at Midmajor U and sell themselves upward with their performances there, and those who can will just sit at the big boys table and order off the menu.

Realhoops wrote:Yeah, the no-sit part is really the biggest factor right now. Guys can go somewhere, get a year experience, and then transfer without sitting to play immediately for the highest bidder. Can debate whether that's right or wrong, but that's not changing anytime soon.

What's going to be interesting is seeing how coaches adapt to the fact that the SECOND transfer now is generally going to require sitting. If you go out and get guys who transfer after their first or second year, you have a much higher likelihood of holding onto them for the remainder of their eligibility, at least in theory. So your high school recruits could be gone in a year, transfers maybe not so much.

The Covid year working out of the system will pull a good number of kids out of the system. It's not only causing a glut of portal kids w/ the option of not sitting out, but also putting a crunch on minutes and opportunities for teams as 5th/6th year seniors keep playing

You're right that we will likely see people taking more care about their transfer because the second transfer won't be free

I suspect the other side of the market will start to work as well. What will NIL deals to do protect themselves against guys who don't perform or who flake out? We may also see teams that throw money around have a harder time finding takers if they don't fulfill their promises in terms of playing time and/or success

Longer term, I wouldn't be shocked to see some sort of clawback clauses in contracts if people transfer early and also wouldn't shock me to see a transfer pricing system of sorts to send money back to the original schools for "development" costs

Not at this point, beyond Armstrong, McCollum and Perry including including CU on their lists. Just need to keep paying attention to list cut-downs and potential visits to gauge the mutual interest here. I'd anticipate things heating up here now that everyone knows Creighton has a starting backcourt spot to offer.

You're the man, thanks for answering. How would you rank them on the basis of being the best fit for what we need?

That's tough to do because I'm not sure what the coaches view as their needs. Are they prioritizing playmaking? Do they want a true point guard to replace Nembhard? Or do they feel confident in Trey running the show, in which case they might be prioritizing shooting/individual creation? It's possible they haven't made a final decision on that and could be going after the most talented player they can land feeling confident that they have the versatility to make it work. We'll likely see some new names pop up on the radar as well as we work through this week's dead period.

Random thoughts/questions.

1. Baylor, Art, Ryan K. and Trey (BART) haven’t announced anything yet. Obviously, that’s better than the alternative. But what can we gather from this? Anything? You’d think if they were considering transferring, they’d get their name out there. More options. More leverage. Maybe I’m overstating this, but it gives me some hope. BART returning would make us a Top 10 team heading into 2023-2024.

2. Creighton is in a great spot to land a top PG portal replacement for R2. Premier destination. That’s positive. Other transfers looking for significant minutes would likely not commit to CU knowing BART are here. That’s a disadvantage.

3. In light of #2, and assuming BART returns, what portal candidates can be targeted that are willing to take on a supporting role? Can always use more shooting. Athletic depth. Depending on how staff feels about Dotzler, another PG to back up the TBD starting PG.

I tend to think 1 is true with respect to Trey, Baylor, and Kalk. But everything out there seems to suggest Art is going to Arizona -- if he's got his mind made up and they've already made him the offers (despite that being against the rules), no need for him to announce quicker.

Point guard first and foremost. Trey and Josiah back him up. If Jays get Rohde he can play some point too so more backup. As of now I’m not concerned. I expect playing a primary role for a Top 10 team that pays good NIL will prove persuasive.

I didn't realize there were credible rumors out there that Art is gone. That's too bad. One reason he might announce sooner if it's a done deal would be to be a good guy and put CU in a position to replace him more effectively. Don't delay the inevitable and don't make Bluejay recruiting that much more challenging. I guess he doesn't owe that to Creighton, but it'd be a decent thing to do. Here's hoping he is a good guy and is either still contemplating or may be returning. Dare to dream.

While not as big of a deal, it's nearly impossible to find another acronym for our returning players when the only vowel is leaving. That's another strike against Art in my book.

I think it’s assumed he’s going to declare for the draft and if he comes back to college, it won’t be at Creighton

Are they credible rumors? It makes no sense to me that he isn’t in the portal yet if he is transferring. Maybe he is considering it but people are acting like it’s a done deal.

Xavier gets a point guard in the portal. They were one of the finalists for Taran Armstrong along with Jays, Zags and Providence. Would think they’re out of it now.
