It is well known we only have one open scholarship. NIL question - why can’t someone (don’t think the school can be involved) get one of our scholarship guys an NIL deal to go off scholarship but still be in the same position financially. Reef gets a $50k NIL deal from Big Fred’s, gives up his schollie and we sign someone else? Just curious.

Picking Big Fred's for this is way too funny for me

The ability for a business to recoup (and hopefully profit) that $50K is tough from one individual basketball player. Especially at $20 a pie.

What would be in it for the player? Why would he give up his scholarship for an NIL deal instead of just looking for one on top of not having to pay for school?

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. This hypothetical makes no sense. Ask the player to give up a scholarship so he can take an NIL deal to pay for the tuition he already had paid for, and thus not get any added personal benefit to himself whatsoever?

I guess if Runza wants to become more of a Creighton school (might be wise) and they offered $150,000, with a condition of the NIL deal being that half of it goes to cover tuition, so the scholarship can be used on another player - unless I'm missing something (totally possible) - that might more sense, even if it's unrealistic. But just washing out the scholarship, I don't see why any player would do that.

I heard from a reliable source that Mason Miller loves Rice Bowl and was going to line up an NIL deal in the 6 figures and give up his scholarship as a result.
