2020 Transfers - Bigs

Postby gtmoBlue » Sat Jan 18, 2020 10:26 pm

Couldn't find the old thread (further back than 3 pages). Here's a new one.

Ctr Russ Barlow - TCU
TCU and Dixon are having issues, it seems.
TCU men’s basketball has seen its entire 2018 class enter the NCAA transfer portal

Latest to enter the transfer portal is Ctr Russ Barlow. Backup ctr. 6-10/230. Barlow had been a redshirt candidate last season, but the program lost that ability by playing him in Big 12 games. Barlow played in eight games, averaging 0.3 points in 6.5 minutes.

Barlow came to TCU as a four-star prospect out of Dallas Bishop Lynch High School.
Barlow provided depth off the bench, although his playing time had dwindled since Ohio State transfer Jaedon LeDee obtained an immediate eligibility waiver. LeDee has given the team another big body inside to pair with starting center Kevin Samuel.

Fwd Deshawn Thomas - LSU
Without having ever suited up for LSU, former Florida Southwestern State big man Deshawn Thomas is in the NCAA Transfer Portal, a source told Geaux247. Head coach Will Wade said in November the 6-9, 235-pounder had yet to be medically cleared to play. AL.com's Matt Zenitz was first to report the news.

In 2018-19 at Florida Southwestern State, Thomas averaged 6.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game

Fwds the Mitchell twins - MD
Freshman forwards Makhi and Makhel Mitchell will transfer from Maryland, coach Mark Turgeon said in a statement Friday evening.

The 6-foot-10 twins from the District of Columbia had both contributed through the season’s first two months, with Makhi starting five games and averaging 9.3 minutes, the eighth most on the team, and scoring 3.3 points with 3.0 rebounds per contest. His brother, Makhel, had appeared in 10 games, averaging 6.8 minutes. Makhel recorded 2.3 rebounds a game.

Fwd Seth Towns - Harvard
Harvard forward Seth Towns has entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, a source confirmed to ZAGSBLOG Thursday. Corey Evans of Rivals was the first to report the news.
The Ivy League does not allow graduate students to play. Towns is set to graduate in May and will have two years to play.
In the 2017-18 season, Towns averaged 16.0 points and 5.7 rebounds and was named Ivy League Player of the Year.

What’s the deal with Towns? Hasn’t played since 2017-2018. Wouldn’t he only have 1 year remaining unless he got a waiver for a 6th year? His clock runs out after next season otherwise.

He will be a grad transfer so can play immediately and has two years of eligibility left because of IVY league rules.

Yes but the NCAA only gives you 5 years to play 4. He would have to apply for a waiver to get a 6th year, ala Grant Gibbs. I get he would be immediately eligible as a grad transfer, but he played 2 seasons and has sat out the last 2. He has 1 year remaining on his 5 year clock. Not sure what happened the past 2 seasons and how that would help/hurt his chances at a 6th year being granted.

another Ivy League grad transfer...

Patrick Tapé

220 Yes Columbia Jeff Goodman, Stadium

Fans of Columbia basketball may have been concerned by the omission of Patrick Tape, a 2019 honorable mention All-Ivy power forward, from Tuesday’s Road to Ivy Madness season preview. By Thursday afternoon, they would have their suspicions increased when Stadium’s Jeff Goodman tweeted that a source informed him that Tape would leave the program, graduate this spring and seek a graduate transfer next year.

Despite being in the team photograph, Tape’s name had been removed from the 2019-20 roster.

When contacted by IHO, Coach Engles provided the following statement:
Last week, Patrick Tapé informed me that he intended to sit out this season in order to pursue graduate transfer opportunities in 2020-21. It’s obviously a tough blow to our team, but we have a resilient group and are looking forward to starting the season next week. I’d like to thank Patrick for all of his contributions to the program and wish him the best of luck in the future.

Tape joins a growing list of All-Ivy stars, including Harvard’s Katie Benzan, Cornell’s Stone Gettings, Dartmouth’s Evan Boudreaux and Penn’s Tony Hicks, who left their programs early to take their talents to hire major programs.

Last year was a breakout season for the Charlotte, N.C. native. Following a sophomore season in which he averaged 4.4 points (53.9 shooting percentage), 5.1 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 0.6 steals over 25 contests, Tape upped his numbers to 11.3 points (66.7 shooting percentage), 5.9 rebounds, `1.3 blocks and one steal in 2018-19.
