It's extremely frustrating to watch our staff invest 2, 3, 4 years into recruiting kids and have them be snatched up by higher profile schools. I'm sick of putting all our eggs in one basket and getting stuck holding the short end of the stick when our "main priority" for a recruiting cycle doesn't commit.
We have to find a way to make some sort of sustainable post-season success or we aren't going to land Top 50 kids. I think it's been proven repeatedly during Mac's tenure that blue-chip kids would much rather wave a towel or come off the bench for spot minutes at a blue-blood program than contribute at Creighton. Aside from the coach's son and 2 local, under-the-radar kids when is the last time we had an impact player that wasn't a transfer? MZ might be that guy. But I don't think we can rely on nor expect Omaha metro schools to keep churning out NBA draft picks regularly.
I will say Patton was not under the radar by the end of highschool, we just got him to commit early while he was.
It is not like this staff has completely failed recruiting, but it is fair to say they have this year. Mitch, Tyshon, and Epperson were all top 100 guys. Zeg, Bishop, and Froling were all top 150. But it is very frustrating wasting all these valuable recruiting resources on guys that go elsewhere. Bowen got us drug into a scandal and we didn't even get him, then missing out on a quality grad transfer last year and now again this year as well as missing out on Enaruna.
What I don't get is their strategy of going all in on one player and not having any sort of plan B. Windham was Creighton's latest signed recruit coming out of highschool, but he fell into their lap due to a coaching change. Other than him, they have signed no highschool recruit later than mid-March. Which begs the question as to why they seemingly don't have a plan B. Also why can they not add a stretch 4? Hopefully there are some surprises to come but I think this staff is really showing what they truly are, good, but not great. There really is no good excuse as to why they will be adding no immediate impact players to next year's team.
