For the lawyers of the board, how is the FBI able to exercise this jurisdiction over the NCAA? Is the NCAA a recipient of federal funding? Where does the government find its way into this investigation and turn NCAA regulations/amateurism laws into federal crimes? I'm asking only because I do not know, as I feel this is a long overdue exposure of these practices

Related, a coworker of mine and I were having a debate over the alleged bribes. Since the player was not under any contracts, could they be acting in any official capacity? Put another way, say the player got the payments; how could the company enforce the transaction? What is to stop the player, when they turn pro, to simply sign with another agency or financial advisor? And does that lack of enforcement mechanism negate any "bribery?" Or does the simple act of money exchange for a future benefit itself constitute a bribe?

I was arguing the latter, but I'm also not a lawyer.

Blackmail. According to the FBI, they are holding the payments over the players' heads.

I'm not sure how the payments themselves are illegal, but I'm sure they are, because the shoe guys want them to be - you can't blackmail people if it's not a crime. The blackmail aspect also means that somewhere at Adidas and Nike there is a filing cabinet with incontrovertible proof of all this stuff, otherwise the blackmail wouldn't work.

How will the NCAA handle all of this? How will they deal with those teams this year? Early signing date is only about 6 weeks away. Will they let it go forward and deal with it later? It's a huge mess that will get worse before it gets better. I also wonder if the NCAA will have some employees in trouble for ignoring this mess? Go Jays!
