2017 Aguek Arop Omaha South (San Diego St Commit)

Pulling a scholarship offer isn't that uncommon. Happens all the time at big schools (including Creighton). Difference here is Miles waited to do it after the AAU circuit was over, costing Arop the opportunity to impress coaches from other schools and thus severely limiting his options going forward. If they'd cut bait in June, this would have been a much smaller story, and it's unlikely his high school coach would be (rightfully so) scorching the earth with venom.

That coach isn't just some random guy, BTW. He's the father of one of the greatest Nebraska basketball players ever. So not only is Miles torching bridges with high school coaches in his state's biggest city, he's torching bridges with his own program's history (what little of it there is).

Miles' days are numbered in Lincoln, I think. Which is too bad, really, because I'm just starting to like the guy

For what it's worth, they didn't actually pull his scholarship. They just asked him to go to prep school for a year despite being a full academic qualifier. Aguek wasn't interested in doing that and took the hint. I think the prep school thing was a way to try to smooth the hit Nebraska was going to take, because he wasn't going to grow three inches in the next year.

So he figuratively pulled the scholie (knowing the kid didn't want to prep a year) instead of literally pulling it. Seems the same to me.

I am pretty sure I've read on here somewhere that this kid has a little brother. Is the little brother a better prospect? He must not be Big 10 caliber, either...or is Miles literally burning a bridge to his brother's recruitment, too?

Question for Jacob (and anyone with a better sense of this): Is this a better scenario for the kid than brining him on campus and then deciding after a year that he's "not a fit?" Cause that happens all the time (even on the hilltop). I am not defending the guy in Lincoln because the timing is "hall of fame douche-baggery" but at least he didn't burn a year in Lincoln to find that out. Thoughts?

I don't think Miles has used his max amount of scholarships available since he has been at Lincoln, so I don't know what the difference is if he had waited a year (redshirt year) to decide on him.

His younger brother's name is Akol and he's entering his sophomore year at Creighton Prep. He spent last year on JV (they went undefeated) but hurt his knee and had surgery midway through the season. He sat out the spring and started playing again in July. He's pretty similar to Aguek - long, freak athlete, good motor... and a 6'4.5" power forward. He'll play big varsity minutes this year and we'll have to see how he develops.

Honestly, this is probably better than bringing him onto campus for a year then telling him to take a hike. However, what also would have been better was cutting him loose before the AAU season, or at least before July. If they already felt like they didn't want to take him, why drag it out? What would have been best was not even offering him in the first place, instead continuing to recruit him and see how he progressed.

There's no way to prove it, but I always figured Miles offered Aguek in reaction to JP and Khyri joining us. Trying to show he was in the game locally. Whatever, Miles is a fail at evaluating talent and in the way he handled the situation.

You gotta love Nebrasketball. First, we get to tan their asses every December. And then they're a source of amusement the rest of the year every time their clown car pulls up to the curb. A good rivalry, really no downside, other than being occasionally annoyed by their ignorant fans.

I believe Miles accepted Arop's commitment about a month after Justin blew up in Vegas and he started to receive the gaudy rankings. This was the sentiment I shared as well. It doesn't seem like Creighton was ever close, or would have ever been close, to offering him a scholarship.

The thing I don't get is you've got two (?) scholarships open. You have no other recruits committed for the '17 class. Why don't you just let him play for a year? If he's not good, at least everyone can see it and you won't get blacklisted by the state's players/coaches for shuffling off a kid who just couldn't cut it at the P5 level. Is he really a worse player than Nick Fuller or Jake Hammond?

Will this help our recruitment of Ed Chang? It seems that the reason people felt that Chang was a Husker lean was because he was tight with Arop. Any news on how Chang did this summer?

A little more on Akol, but he was only able to play in 3 games last year for the JV team. Still averaged 17 ppg, 9 rpg (11 oreb and 16 dreb whole season) and 6 blocks in those 3 games. Shot 22-31 (71%) from the field and 7-13 (53%) from the line. Probably doesn't mean much but should have a big season.

Also on Akol: we measured his standing vertical leap at 34" last month and he won the dunk contest at our Top 50 Showcase. 6'4.5" with a 6'9" wingspan at 15 years old. He's not quite as big as Aguek was at that stage, but physical tools are still really impressive.

Enrolled at the Skills Factory in Atlanta. Had 33 pts and 11 boards in his last game, earned an offer from Memphis and I hear Creighton was down to see him.
