2016 PG Cane Broome (Cincinnati Commit)

We saw the talent level in the NEC against Wagner. Patriot League where Watson came from is better IMO.

Good programs are after Broome, so there must be some good things. But how could someone have a negative assist to turnover ratio against teams worse than Wagner? It just sticks out to me.

He seems smaller than Mo, who has always seemed strong for his size. Broome is slender and short. It'll be interesting to see where he goes. He's certainly put up some impressive scoring numbers.

I may be wrong but I think MA will be more than serviceable in the season to come.

I think Malik will be very important to our success next year. It may have taken him longer to get it than we would have liked, but he showed good flashes in the last several games, and certainly has the athleticism to compete in the BE, particularly if he hits the S&C hard this summer. But, count me in with those who aren't excited about a high volume shooting point guard with an assist to TO ratio less than 1.0 in the Patriot league. Depth only helps if its good enough to compete at the level you are at. Seems to me that we have a lot of guards/wings with firepower over the next several years with who is on the roster and who is signed/committed. I'd rather we look for another 6'8 or so power forward with some shooting range.

I'd rather roll the dice with Mailk then bring in an undersized, shoot first, turnover prone PG. Malik is bigger, longer,and we've seen flashes of his crazy athleticism. It took a while, but he really seemed to settle in and gain confidence once Mac actually played him in more than mop up time. Plus I liked the look when we put Mo and Malik on the floor together.

I know at this point quality big men or post players are hard to come by. But what about a 6'6 wing player? Either a versatile scorer, or someone that get after it on defense or hit the glass hard.

Malik will graduate next year, Cane has to sit a year. They won't be playing at the same time. It isn't either/or.

there's a lot of differences btw mo and broome - and because they both aren't very tall - they'll get a lot of comparisons

but - as pointed out - mo is thick - heck i think he might have missed his calling - he could be an NFL quality corner IMO

and his creativity and ability to finish at the rim is rare - and even that said - earlier in the year (before BE play even) - he mentioned how he was having to adjust to the length and athleticism of guys at this level

plus - his numbers coming in showed his ability to distribute the ball without turning it over (too much)

right now we i don't think we're looking at any other transfer PGs - so there must be something special that the coaches see in Broome to bring him to campus

but then - not everyone brought to campus gets offered either. i'm still not sure what to think of this kid.

I don't know what to make of Broome either. We are probably seeing the end of one McDermott tradition this year (the starting walk-on) but I worry Broome may augur the continuation of another - the turnover prone, shoot-first ask questions later, point guard transfer. Call it the Devin Brooks scholarship winner. Next season Davion will be on the team and we still have Malik (who I thought made good strides at the end of the year) as our insurance policy. Malik didn't have the benefit of red shirt that Broome MUST endure. To my way of thinking if you grab Broome you better be convinced that he will really be special in year 2 or at least better than any high school recruit you might get next year. And if you take Broome and he doesn't work out Mac should take ownership of that bad call. It's not on his assistants, he's the guy that gives the go ahead. And failure of judgment isn't the worst thing.

Am I the only one that thinks the staff may see value in having a PG on the roster that actually has, you know, actually started a college game? Remember that Malik and Mo both graduate before Cane would become eligible. If nothing else, an experienced PG would be a nice insurance policy since our other PGs will all be gone.

I also think some of Cane's turnovers can be attributed to the fact that opponents were able to focus all of their attention solely upon him. I posted an article elsewhere in the thread which said that Cane was POY in the conference despite having little help on his own team and being almost the entire focus of opposing defenses.
