Steve Lavin’s San Diego squad is 4-18 this year, he may be coming back for Dollar Beer Night soon.

It is bizarre. There are 8 Big East matchups that haven't happened yet, and three involve Xavier. Four home-and-homes are now done for the season, and three of those include X.

But now that they've run most of the gauntlet, with only the Jays left among the power four, Xavier should be feeling pretty good about themselves. They won twice in their UConn-MU-StJ tour and, after Wednesday, they'll have the Creighton roadie out of the way. Their sked was definitely front-loaded, and they could coast a little in the back half. One of their toughest remaining opponents (besides us) could be over-confidence. If anybody's in a position to sneak into the very top echelon of the league by season's end, it's them.

I suppose there are a lot of variables that go into scheduling, like arena availability in the case of MSG, Wells Fargo, and whatever the DC arena is called this week. Then the BE has to figure out Lavin's availability for discount beer nights. That can't be easy now that he's coaching again. It's like solving a Rubik's cube. Well, I'm guessing, since I never solved one myself. But I've heard stories.

If Jays beat X this week, it will be tough for them to get to top 4 in BE standings. I certainly feel they can get a 5th tourney bid if they finish strong with their favorable schedule. Like him or not, Sean Miller is a hellava coach.

I used to despise Miller when he was at AZ (and at X the first go-around). He just seemed smug, and a cheater to boot. But I've actually grown to like him this second go around with X. I think the firing from AZ humbled him a bit. Now when I hear him in interviews, he doesn't make excuses (like DH), gives credit to the other team, and doesn't throw his players under the bus (like RP). I like him in our league.

I lke the fact that we've won our way back up the standings. Sitting alone in 3rd currently. Beat xavier and we're right where we need to be. Uconn-StJ-Marq have yet to play each other. One or two of them will choke. Even if they all split, that's 2 L's apiece. We have both Marq & Uconn at home and StJ on the road (winnable game). I like our chances of winning the conference...as long as we stay consistent (winning).

UConn @ Marq Feb 1st (Marq W)
Marq @ StJ Feb 4th (StJ W)
StJ @ UConn Feb 7th (Conn W)

Marq @ Crei Feb 8th (Crei W) Poss for outright 1st in standings...
UConn @ Crei Feb 11th (Crei W - sweep)
Crei @ StJ Feb 16th (Crei W - sweep)

UConn @ StJ Feb 23rd (StJ W)
Marq @ UConn Mar 5th (Conn W)
StJ @ Marq Mar 8th (Marq W)

Yeah Hoiberg's strategy has been to load up their noncon with cupcakes to get in the dance the cheap way. The committee should stop rewarding that.
