that would be my interpretation. I tend to think of Shatel as a trusted conduit for the two Universities in Nebraska to get information out, so I think him tweeting this is good news that very likely to happen

Great! Glad to see this thread worked. Rarely does message board banter have such a profound impact on real world results.

I kid, I kid. Hopefully we can put this topic to bed for many years ahead and enjoy the run.

Hope a deal is done soon that:

1) Makes Mac's salary much more competitive
2) Gives him a longer contract
3) Includes a buyout of epic proportions that scares away almost all other schools

Agree that Shatel isn't going to tweet something unless he is particularly well-sourced. He is a solid journalist, contrary to what some might believe.

Just throwin this out there... don't have any inside info... but my guess would be that it will be a 4 year deal (or however long it is that the recruits from this year know that Mac will be around for the duration of their eligibility). Money? Who knows. Prolly whatever Mac asks for. Cause he's not gonna ask for the moon like some guys would. Other considerations, like budgets for this that and the other things...? Again, whatever he thinks he needs to keep the ball rollin'.

Bottom line is... this shouldn't be a long drawn out thing.

I doubt a big buyout is necessary. If Mac leaves, It'll be for the golf course... not another basketball program collegiate or pro.

Not saying you are wrong, but many of us thought this a couple years ago, and here we are once again.

Some of you are so gullible. Mac was never leaving (unless the admin straight out refused to extend his contract). This was all (brilliant) negotiating. Jobs that he would be a candidate for opened up during a top 15 season, following an elite 8 run and around a win over the No. 1 team. Mac would have to fire his agent if CU didn't pony up for a better deal after all that. It's called leverage. Mac had it. He is taking advantage, as he should.

1620 interviewed Shatel today. Interesting interview. Tom said it was odd that we only extended Mac for four years two years ago, and he apparently only got a relatively small bump in pay. It is strange it wasn't a longer deal at that time. Tom has some reasonable ideas as to why it was only four years (new relationship with Marcus, NCAA issue involving Preston, comment, etc...). But, he suggested it should have been longer last time and that it is a little strange to be doing these same negotiations in such a short time period. He also said Mac is way underpaid compared to his peers in the BE. Pitino, Cooley, Shaka, and Hurley all make substantially more (per Tom). He also said Mac's standing with boosters and Omaha in general has increased every year and is better than ever at the current moment. Lastly, Shatel also cautioned that this isn't a done deal yet. It is kind of sad that after 14 years and all kinds of success, both sides have to play these games in the media. Just get the deal done.

Thank you for the summary.

If Shantel’s background is primarily with UNL, then he doesn’t understand that the ideal way for a school to do business is not to sign massive deals with massive buyouts that have your university paying millions upon millions well after the fact. I’m not surprised with his lack of understanding here. That, in addition to the things you mentioned above, most certainly led to the shorter deal than potentially desired by Mac. And to be fair, Mac probably understood it a bit as well, and obviously agreed if he signed in the first place.

The general public knows Mac is under paid. They/we also know his stock around town and nationally is at its highest. Those aren’t truth bombs. And to caveat that nothing is final is both truth and his attempt and ensuring if the bottom falls out, he has an out.

If the U and Mac get to 4 or 5 more years + a pay bump to something fair, Mac is gonna take it. It’s where he wants to be and for how long he wants it to be (right now anyway). Ink it and let’s go!

Many articles that came out linking Mac to other jobs openly mentioned perceived tension between Coach and Hendrickson. While this was circulated amongst the Jays fanbase, I hadn't heard it discussed publicly on the radio and in the paper until recently. Considering Mac's popularity in Omaha, and across the country for that matter, I don't think Fr. Hendrickson liked the optics of being perceived as the villain in this story. Given his ego, not surprising he is willing to open the checkbook and put this story to rest.
