This is a big if, but IF he were to pick the Jays, our backcourt/wing spot suddenly gets a little crowded for 21, way more than we ever could have imagined a few months ago. We’d have O’Connell and Kunkel eligible, Rati as a sophomore, and you’d imagine Antwann Jones still around. I wonder how and if a Kunkel commitment would change our recruitment of high school guards and wings in 21, and there’s a lot of really good ones were going after. (Sallis, Bates, Reyes, etc.)
A lot of 4 guard sets?
It looks like a really fun roster -- I think Antwann Jones is as able to play our version of the 4 as Ballock, Mahoney, and Jefferson.
An alternate possibility is that Bishop works on his shot and handle and plays some 4 with Kalkbrenner and Epperson at the 5. Bishop was effective and comfortable playing at the top of the key this year and his ability to pass was really effective for us, a bit of improvement with his offense out there would make him more flexible at the 5 and 4.
No idea what we'll have in Kancleris. Film was just strange, but you can see the athleticism and the hints of the skills (and the different camps all said good things about him)
Kunkel would be a real nice pickup, we will be losing Ballock (and maybe Marcus) and we'll need some shooters. A couple of reasons why Creighton would be a good fit from his perspective:
- We do play 4 guard lineups. We have no problem with him on the court next to O'Connell and A. Jones at the same time
- Our S&C program's done great work the last couple of years. O'Connell came here because he wanted to do the most with his transfer year, and Kunkel could work on his athleticism in a way that would give him a big jump (he apparently wanted to have a RS year as a Frosh, but snuck into the rotation at Belmont).
In the end, everyone needs a shooter these days, but unlike most programs, we really know how to use them in the best way possible (and don't make them sit in a corner and draw defensive attention away from their drive and dump guys)
