2014 PG Tarin Smith

Postby AttyAlum » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:52 pm

From legendary St Anthony's in Jersey (Echenique's school) and coached by hall of famer Bob Hurley.

One of the few remaining class of 2014 PGs

Interesting response from Hurley. Doesn't sound like he's totally convinced he can be a Big East PG. But, it also sounds like he's really coming into his own lately, so we'll see. If Providence offers, it sounds as if he's their's to lose.

Echenique did not attend St Anthony's. He went to St Benedict's Prep.

Rivals recruiting has a good bio on him.
Puts Tarin in similar good company: LaChance, Devin Watson (Cali), and Ty Taylor. :)

Committed to Nebraska. And based on what I've read about his game, that's totally fine by me. Sounds like a project. We did not offer. Providence did not offer.

According to the article listed earlier...Tarin is a late bloomer and a good kid. Nice p/u by the skers.

Who knows? Insofar as there is very little PG talent available and Tai Webster is the worst player in Nebraska's rotation, it was probably a good pickup by the 'Skers.

No one predicted that Bryce Cotton and Doug McDermott would be the two best players in the Big East. But, when a kid plays at St. Anthony and Bob Hurley says the following, the odds are not in favor of that kid being a difference maker for a high major school:

“I think he can run a college team and it’s up to those guys to figure out at what level. By his recruiting, he’s at least being recruited by the Atlantic 10 level which is not too far off anything else. If teams from the Atlantic 10 are recruiting you then you’re close to being capable of playing in most leagues.”

Hurley made comments earlier in the year in which he indicated he didn't think Smith was talented enough to have an impact at a high-major program. Seems like the Huskers realized how desperate their PG situation was and they picked Smith up as a safety net.
