I actually think it was just for his school's division, conference, region, or whatever they call it in NC.

"North Meck's Davion Mintz named MECKA 4A Player of the Year" is what I saw.
If I recall correctly that is the states toughest/most talented division.

Per Wikipedia, North Carolina has four classifications (1A through 4A), which are each divided into regional conferences. 4A is the class with the largest schools across the state, and MeCKa is the regional conference in which Davion's team plays. The conference has 7 schools.

But their semi final loss was for the whole state of 4a's, right?

Davion picked as one of the top 15 incoming point guards:

http://www.thehoopscolumn.com/2016/06/03/oh-my-guard-diaper-dandies-edition/
6’3″ Davion Mintz (Creighton) - Creighton’s backcourt is going to be fun watch for years to come with the arrival of Mintz. He combines a feathery touch from outside, with the ability to create off the bounce for himself and others. With Mintz’s work ethic Coach McDermott has insured leadership in his backcourt.
Similar Game Type: Vern Fleming (UGA)

Fans always think they "got a steal" when their recruits aren't ranked highly. The also gush over highlight films, which of course are just highlights. That being said, I think he's a steal and his highlights show a skilled, athletic point guard who sees the court well. I'm eager to see how he ends up in final rankings. Right now he's 338 in 247 composite.

#338? That is downright comical. Anyone with a brain wouldn't put him anywhere near that low after watching that mixtape. I believe Davion will be a prime example of why recruiting high school basketball players is very much an inexact science. It seems like every year there are a handful of freshmen guards that end up performing way beyond their "recruiting projection"

I don't know how Davion has gone this long without receiving recognition from recruiting services. He doesn't look like an advanced ball handler per say, but its clear can change speeds in the halfcourt and get out in transition quickly. He has a consistent, quick release on his jumper and great elevation. It also looks like he's got great length and is an explosive leaper off one foot. What am I missing? How does a player like this go under the radar for so long?

Either way, I'm excited because he provides great size and athleticism for a point guard. You know the easiest way to get minutes, Davion? Play great defense
