2015 SG Ricky Council (Providence Verbal)

Tue Jan 20, 2015 3:26 pm

Creighton has picked up real interest in 2015 prep school SG Ricky Council. The 6'4'' Council is seen as an good athlete with elite shooting skills. Council recently picked up an offer from Providence and has UConn and NC State in pursuit. Look for the Jays to be involved moving forward with an offer close.

Do you know anymore details? He doesn't seem to be highly rated by any of the recruiting services. Looks to have a number of mid-major offers, but has recently had bigger schools looking at him. Late bloomer?

Maybe. Or he might just be an overlooked prospect who is now garnering more attention.

Marquette is also in pursuit. Ricky has really garnered a lot of interest lately.

Ok, I like this kid, we should concentrate on him, not Trent. I see he reportedly has a 3.8 gpa, with articles saying he also has basketball smarts. Scored over 50 points in a game, so that tells me all I need to know about his scoring potential, and at 6'4" is good height. Hope the staff can close on this one.

I asked Jerry Meyer why Council seemed to be not valued very high by recruiting services but picking up a lot of interest from high majors? He responded that he has been playing well and late availability.

Of course, being from Durham, NC, he has previously made no secret of wanting to play at a certain school in that town, who wouldn't. I sure want to be optimistic that we have a chance, he is exactly the type of SG we need.

Why don't you go have an $11 Bloody Mary to ease your nerves?

The updates on him are strange. According to an article talking about Providence offering him, he stayed at his local public school and didn't play on a sponsored AAU team and missed out on a lot of attention. Not sure of his high end capability as the Providence article reports someone describing him as a Mid-Major-Plus or High-Major-Minus type of player -- but those tags tend to get put on someone who doesn't necessarily explode out of the gym when they jump, but he has the size and athleticism to play at a pretty high level and his skill level appears to be good. I think he's also played more of a SF in HS and would be a conversion to a more pure SG player at the next level.

Jamie Shaw, SE Region Scout wrote:Ricky Council is an elite level shooter. He hunts spots to shoot from and has deep range and great form. Has really picked up his attack game in the last year. While he used to be strictly a shooter, he now can take off the bounce to the rack. Strong build, is improving each time out.
